Lymphatic Drainage: the ideal post Christmas detox!

We are coming into the holiday period, crazy time of year when we all eat and drink waaaay too much, never do quite as much as we intended and regret it all afterwards looking for a quick fix! Well, we might be able to help with the overindulgence yukky feelings you may have at the end of the holiday period.

This is one of the best illustrations I have seen to show how the lymphatic system works.

The lymphatic system is the waste disposal system. There are a lot of factors that can put this under stress, which means it becomes less effective and that waste system can become blocked. This is when you start to feel sluggish, bloated and less than your usual self. This is also when manual lymphatic drainage can be a very useful intervention to get things back on track.

Key functions of the lymphatic system:

  • Maintains fluid levels in your body: As just described, the lymphatic system collects excess fluid that drains from cells and tissue throughout the body and returns it to the bloodstream, which is then recirculated through the body.
  • Absorbs fats from the digestive tract: Lymph includes fluids from the intestines that contain fats and proteins and transports it back to the bloodstream.
  • Protects your body against foreign invaders: The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. It produces and releases lymphocytes (white blood cells) and other immune cells that monitor and then destroy the foreign invaders — such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi — that enter the body.

What can negatively affect the lymphatic system?

Some of the most well known problem causes include (but is not limited to)..

  • dehydration (slows down the system)
  • lowered immunity
  • infection
  • certain diseases
  • alcohol and caffeine in excess (acts as a diuretic)
  • diets high in sugar

How does lymphatic drainage work as a detox?

It works in this way because the therapist works in a light but methodical pattern in accordance with how the lymphatic system flows around your body. The goal is to promote increased flow in the system, encourage congested areas to ease and with repeated treatments, unblock, and thus expel toxins faster than if you left your body to take care of it yourself.

Repeated treatments will help get the system flowing better, faster and more efficiently. We can also teach you some simple techniques to self treat in between appointments.

Some other things that lymphatic drainage can help with…

  • varicose veins
  • post surgical swelling
  • acute sports injuries
  • sports recovery
  • sprains / strains
  • sinsitis
  • tinnitus
  • Meniere’s disease
  • muscle / ligament tears
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • tendonitis
  • tension headaches
  • migraines
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • stress reduction
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • chronic fatigue
  • colitis
  • fibromyalgia
  • scars / burns
