The stage finishes with 3 laps of Queen’s Park, starting in Winton. We waited on the Lorneville-Dacre highway for them to come through to Myross Bush, intending to then drive to town and catch them there, then watch the finish.
I was hooked up to live updates, and as they approached us at the junction, the breakaway 5 riders which included local boy Tom Scully, were 1:40 ahead of the Peloton. By the time we saw them approach us on their first lap of Queens Park, the break away’s lead was less than 40 seconds. There was also a couple of splinter groups formed, as a few riders struggled to keep up with the vicious chase pace of the peloton.
After they passed for the start of their penultimate lap, we moved towards the finish, standing by the Feldwick Gates on Gala St. As they rounded the corner for the sprint to the line, we suddenly realised that the peloton had caught the break away on the last lap of the park, it was now anyone’s win.
Brad Evans (above) took the stage win, but the overall tour win and yellow Jersey went to Mitchell Lovelock-Faye of Team Avanti Racing.
Exciting final stage, and great to watch, right on my doorstep.
Perhaps next year I will be able to watch stage 5 too, the stage that passes right bast my gate, and one I have always missed so far due to work!
