Daily post: Write about something you consider “ugly” — war, violence, failure, hatred — but try to find beauty, or a sense of hope, in your thoughts.
Racial hatred. I come from a part of the North of England where I am ashamed to say, the first BNP seat in the European Parliament was won. I am not racist, I deplore anyone who is. I hate that my home town is famous for this reason. I hate the extremists that use religion as an excuse for violence. I hate the images in my mind of when I visited Northern Ireland as a child, to see family: the first scene off the boat, in the shopping centre, at every corner was armed police and armoured vehicle patrols.
I watched a very good and very cleverly put together parallel drama that was on DVD (from Channel 4). It told a story of an asian brother and sister, the brother worked for the secret service or something similar, on the terrorism branch: seeking out asian extremists. The sister was drawn into the opposite path, becoming an extremist herself. Neither had any idea of the other’s path.
Its a very cleverly put together film, which shows both sides of the story quite well. I can SORT OF see how the whole extremist violence comes about, but that doesn’t make it right. I can understand people being very angry about what happened to Drummer Rigby, but violence is not the answer. Neither is setting up extremist political parties.
We live in a multi cultural world. Anyone who believes that countries should remain one race must face the fact that they are being racist. No single race is elite, or should have power over the other. Many wars have been fought to gain us the democracies that we have around the world today: yes, there is still MUCH work to be done too.
I strongly disagree with racism, and any violence related to it. I am ashamed to be born into a country that seems to have a growing problem in this regard.
