Its all in the name….

all in the nameDaily post: Write about your first name: Are you named after someone or something? Are there any stories or associations attached to it? If you had the choice, would you rename yourself?

My name – MELANIE is one that my mother decided upon for her very first child many years before I was even a twinkle in her eye. I quite like it because its not a day to day common name, but dislike it because it tends to get shortened and only used in full when I am getting shouted at!

Would I change it? I am not sure what I would change it to if I did, so probably not. But, I did in fact change the name of my sister!! That is a funny story!

I was 6 years old the year she was born. My mother wanted to call her Grainne which is an Irish name that is pronounced ‘Gronya’. I decided that wasn’t a good plan, so shortly after she was born I told the entire neighbourhood that I had a new sister called Samantha! My mother was forced to call her that instead!!

  1. Before I was born my parents decided that if I were male mum would name me Raul (after the actor Raul Julia) and being female dad named me after Julie Christie (model).
I’m not sure that I’d change my name, it’s neither a young or old name and I don’t mind if people call me Ju.
My lovely Uncle Bill used to call me Jules ❤ no one else ever called/calls me that and only two people occasionally use it now on the rare occasion I see them. I love being called Jules as it makes me sad with endearment and memories.

I have four boys, at the time I wanted the the older two to have strong, rustic, farmy names so chose Thomas & Jack. Thomas was gutted in his later years to realise I was thinking of calling him 'Jerico' after the band called Then Jerico, stating 'But muuuuum Jerico is so cool!'. My third child is called Atticus after Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, this book I read at school and loved so when hubby & I were deciding on names I threw it into the process & we chose Atticus. Our fourth child is called Maximillian after Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca. In the book he is Maximillian and is shortened to Maxim, which we do also & gladly everyone calls him, most people know better than to call my boy 'Max'!!
