Daily prompt: Do you have animals in your life? If yes, what do they mean to you? If no, why have you opted not to?
Since I was a child we always had cats in the house. So, as an adult, I have done the same.
We have had many cats, but the most recent we have had since they were 6 weeks old, we got them from a rescue organisation. We were in fact only meant to get one, but the other cat there at the time was really sick, and couldn’t be homed because of that. We fell in love with them both, took one and held out for the other one till she was well enough.
We called them Misty and Smokey: Misty because she had a misty eye, being partially sighted, and the other Smokey, because he was black.
Smokey is 8 years old this year. Misty however, she died last year. I was heart broken. Her poorly eye used to flair up every now and again. It was like it was because she caught and survived cat flu as a kitten. She actually caught it again at about three years old, had to be house quarantined and fought it off again. Amazing once, but almost unheard of to beat it twice.
Early last year her poorly eye was flaring up again. We took her to the vet, and they said the eye would need to come out. Hubby took her to the vet for the op the following day. I never saw my poor darling Misty again. They discovered she had mouth cancer. They had no idea how she had continued to speak, eat, and carry on life as normal. They called me at work to get my blessing to put her to sleep, it was the kindest thing.
We still have Smokey, who as I said will be eight this year. He too was a bit confused at first, constantly looking for his surrogate sister.
Since Misty has gone, Smokey has put on weight, because when she was around, she ate everything in sight, and all he got was the left overs!
Misty was a feisty little thing. She ruled the roost, put everyone in their places, and kept the neighbourhood cats at bay. Now they wander in and Smokey doesn’t bat an eyelid! He is the more easy going, quietly spoken one, who just loves to get attention, sleep, eat or roam around outside!
RIP Misty, meanwhile the ‘discussion’ still goes on regards whether Smokey will come with us to New Zealand. He has already put his charm pants on and wooed my friend, who has offered to be his surrogate mummy!
