There’s always someone who knows more!!

mentorDaily Prompt: Have you ever had a mentor? What was the greatest lesson you learned from him or her?

Throughout my triathlon career I have had mentors, coaches, lots of people that have given me advice over the years. A number of those have given life changing advice. Here are my main ones.

Steve Casson

Paul, Jen, Steve and me in Athlone, European champs, 2010

Steve was my first triathlon coach. I enlisted his help simply to get me off the last page of the results. He said almost immediately that I could get onto the GB team. I didn’t believe him! 12 months later I was flying to Australia for my first World Championships! He taught me to never limit the possibilities with my own perceptions.

Anything is possible, if the mind can conceive, you can achieve.

Emma Davis

Emma and I in Auckland, October 2012

Emma is my current coach. I enlisted her help at a dark time in my triathlon career. My head was not in a good place, I was full of self doubts. She has coached me through knee injury, delivering me to the 2012 World championships in the best shape I could be, given the injury. She was there, on the sidelines, and she was there before and afterwards. She made me realise that I can push myself MUCH harder and much further than I could ever imagine.

you CAN do it, and you can do it better than you might ever think, despite the obstacles in your way.
