Is it possible to eat too much fruit?


ripe-fruitThe short answer is YES. here is why. Fruit contains fructose, a natural sugar, yes, but a sugar nonetheless. carbohydrate is our main source of energy in our diet. Simple carbohydrates are made of glucose and fructose.

What does the body do with glucose and fructose?

Some is used by tissues and organs, some converted to glycogen and stored by the muscles, and the rest stored as fat. Carbohydrate is the thing in most peoples diets that we overeat on, and simple carbohydrates are much more likely to be stored as fat. If you are not burning off the carbs through exercise, within 20 minutes of eating them, the body stores them.

The more aerobically fit you are, the more efficient your body is at burning fat, and you can exercise for longer before your body converts to using carb stores.

What happens if you eat a lot of fruit?

The likelihoos is you have a sweet craving, which is energy based. Sugar is a quick high and also a quick crash too, therefore making it not very effective as an energy source, and much more effective as a fat store!

What could you do to fix this?

Eat less sugar based foods, and snack on protein based or high fibre based snacks. Your body has to work harder to process it, and protein / fibre will refuel your muscles and make you feel fuller for longer.
