The huge surf due to high winds made for a tough race for everyone in the aquathlon world championships.
It seemed odds to be out on the same course at the same time as the elite race, so when the ITU Nike came past me during the run shouting ‘fast runners coming through’ I knew the elite men were about to run past me. What I didn’t expect to see though, was the Slovakian athlete Richard Varga who seemed to have a huge lead over Great Britain’s Richard Stannard, the current world champion. He wasn’t able to run Vargas down though, who is always a strong swimmer anyway, and Stannard had to settle for silver with Stojanovic from Serbia taking silver.
In the elite women, it was home girl Nicky Samuels who took the title, with Ireland’s Emma Davis in close Second. Again, perhaps the huge surf played into the hands of the local girl, who got past David in T2 and ran her way to the title. Davis took silver with Tia Milos taking bronze.
