Rapid weight loss with Raspberry Ketone: is it safe?

Raspberry Ketone is, apparently the next rapid weight loss diet mania to hit the high street, but what exactly is it?

The science

Many ketones are known and many are of great importance in industry and in biology. Examples include many sugars and the industrial solvent acetone.

ketones play an important role in the chemistry of carbohydrates. Glucose and fructose, for example, are carbohydrates. Glucose is an aldehyde; fructose is a ketone.

Ketone bodies are three water-soluble compounds that are produced as by-products when fatty acids are broken down for energy in the liver. Two of the three are used as a source of energy in the heart and brain while the third is a waste product excreted from the body. In the brain, they are a vital source of energy during fasting

Ketone bodies can be used for energy. Ketone bodies are transported from the liver to other tissues, where acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate can be reconverted to acetyl-CoA to produce energy, via the citric acid cycle.

The heart preferentially utilizes fatty acids for energy under normal physiologic conditions. However, under ketotic conditions, the heart can effectively utilize ketone bodies for energy.

The brain gets a portion of its energy from ketone bodies when glucose is less available (e.g., during fasting, strenuous exercise, low carbohydrate, ketogenic diet and in neonates). In the event of low blood glucose, most other tissues have additional energy sources besides ketone bodies (such as fatty acids), but the brain does not. After the diet has been changed to lower blood glucose for 3 days, the brain gets 25% of its energy from ketone bodies. After about 4 days, this goes up to 70% (during the initial stages the brain does not burn ketones, since they are an important substrate for lipid synthesis in the brain).

The ‘diet’

I am not one to promote food supplements that aid rapid weight loss, as I do not believe they help at all in fixing the original problem: too much food intake, too little exercise expended = you end up overweight. I also do not believe in the ‘diet’ idea, as a diet usually means something that starts and ends, and includes mental anguish.

I researched whether there were any dangers in this type of supplement, and it seems not. I believe the danger is that people may come independent on the tablets, to maintain weight, and therefore sustain a very imbalanced diet. The danger also, as with any rapid weight loss diets, is that the moment they stop taking them, because the original problem was not fixed, the weight will return, and usually the person will be more overweight than they were at the beginning.

Supplements your eating plan can also:

  • Limit absorption of vitamins and minerals
  • Light eaters are likely to have a low level of thiamine, calcium and iron
  • Higher demands of vitamins A and C in teenagers due to growth spurts could be put at risk
  • Pregnant mothers need a higher level of vitamins and minerals, which may be disturbed by such supplements

Rapid weight loss is neither sustainable, nor healthy, because it usually involves dehydration and loss of muscle tissue. This in turn will slow down your metabolism, which will in turn raise the risk of higher weight gain.

Effective weight management

The key to effective weight management is:

  • Slow progressive weight loss
  • Exercise should play a major role
  • Muscle mass should not be lost
  • All nutrient requirements should be met
  • Small frequent meals are effective because they provide metabolic ‘bursts’
  • Whole food diet, high in fibre
  • Avoid processed foods which often contain hidden trans fats

Conclusion

We all want rapid results, but just be aware, if you choose this option of rapid weight loss supplements like Raspberry Ketone, beware of the possible dangers of sustaining this type of intake long term and be aware that you will still need to learn about good balanced nutrition that matches your body type, size and exercise regime.

You want to have your cake AND eat it? You can, but it involves a good balanced diet, sensible choices and a complimentary exercise regime.
